African American Teen Cigarette Smoking: A Review

چکیده
the lowest among all racial and ethnic groups in the United States. From 1978 to 1991, smoking rates declined for both males and females in this group (Bachman et al., 1991). The Monitoring the Future (MTF) study showed that in 1978, 24.9 percent of African American high school seniors had smoked a cigarette daily, whereas only 4.1 percent reported this activity in 1991 (Johnston et al., 1996). Similarly, the prevalence of smoking among African American adolescents has been substantially lower than the prevalence among White and Hispanic adolescents. This phenomenon is attested to by national, regional, and local surveys spanning the last 20 years (Bachman et al., 1991; U.S. DHHS, 1994; CDC, 1996a; Johnston et al., 1996; Sheridan et al., 1993; Greenlund et al., 1996).
